Another Stab at the Gym

The Gym and I are back on good terms. I found out the secret to the water aerobics class… Go with a friend. There is safety in numbers.

I mentioned that I wanted to try the class again. A friend who belongs to the same gym said that she wanted to try the class, too. WooHoo! We looked at our calendars, then at the classes offered at the gym and settled on two days we would be able to attend together.

We agreed to met at the gym. I changed in the locker room and headed out to the pool. Only a couple of lap swimmers were in the water. I picked up the equipment we would need, a noodle and a couple of weights. I placed them on the side of the pool and waited for my friend. I did a couple of laps and walked around until she arrived. Good thing she was a little early, too. Lots of women started coming out of the locker room and even a few men.

I started to get a little anxious remembering the last time I tried this. These ladies had the system down. Along with one of the men, they removed the lane lines and the others started to take their positions. We staked out an area for ourselves and didn’t budge.

The class began and we didn’t get pushed around or told that someone else used the place where we were. It was a great experience.

We met again at the gym a few days later. I got the equipment and ‘reserved’ an area. A different teacher this time. We did more stretching but still got some cardio in.

We’ve been going for over a year now and we still enjoy it. The pool is crowded during ‘season’ and then it eases off for the late spring and summer. Don’t worry the snow birds will be back.

I was in the pool doing my standard couple of laps and then walking when I looked up and saw a woman exit the locker room. Nope, my eyes were not deceiving me. She was wearing a Pink Plushy Terrycloth Robe! She owned it too. You know the type, they can put on rags and look fantastic. She even looked great with her white hair in a short pixie cut.

I admit, I was a bit intimidated. She had swim gloves and went about the workout with no nonsense. She came to both classes, always in the Pink Bathrobe. I finally told her that I wanted to be her when I grow up.

She laughed and said, “Dearie, I even drive a convertible with the top down. I get looks all the way here and back home. It’s just silly to change and then drive home.”

She’s my SHEro! I still don’t have the nerve to wear a bathrobe to the gym but I’m working on it. I did walk out with just a towel around me last week.

  1. Love your stories! You are a brave woman…I dash out, jump in our pool (making sure no one is around) and float in the inner tube a while. That’s my exercise…walking back to the house!
