The Compliment

Recently, I was given a compliment on my hair. It was a weird feeling, as I have not received many compliments from the opposite sex. What a strange feeling.

My first reaction was to answer, “Aren’t I a little young for you?” I didn’t say that, though the urge was powerful. I replied, thank you. For context, I believe the gentleman in question is a few years younger than myself. He has been a companion to someone I know for many years.

At one time, he had wanted the relationship to advance to marriage and children. The relationship changes somewhat when he finds out the woman’s actual age. Silly man, he believed her only to be a few years older but discovered it was more like thirty years, and her childbearing fertility had passed. They no longer live together but spend much time in each other’s presence and often accompany each other to family dinners, celebrations, etc.

A kudo or admiration from female friends is not questioned.

“I like your dress.”
“I like your shoes; where did you get them?”
“Can I have your recipe? That was delicious.”

No ulterior motive is thought. It is a comfort to accept and file away.

Having been a widow for twenty years, I suppose I believed I was invisible to the male population.

A courteous observation is not an invitation for dinner or anything. Just accept the compliment, silly. Bask in the knowledge that someone has seen you and recognized your existence. Love it and embrace it. Let the warmth envelope and snuggle your heart.

What are your feelings and reactions to a compliment? Do you automatically dismiss them? Do you laugh? Do you compliment back? I wonder and would like to know your thoughts.

  1. Interesting observation and good to hear from you again, Fran. I’m not good with compliments. I don’t get that many, but I usually say “thanks.” “Your play was very funny.” “Thanks.” “I think you’re very funny.” “Thanks.” “Your feet smell funny.” For me, “funny” is always in the compliment.

Good job, Fran. Keep them coming.
