Word Salad

Salad
Word Salad . . .
I heard this term the other day and it caught my attention. The speaker was poking fun at someone who was rambling on and on with no apparent point. It was pretty funny. Of course, I just had to delve into the meaning, I’m kinda weird that way. Here is some of what was discovered . . .

Word Salad is used in psychology pertaining to certain mental disorders. It is a real term and I would not want it used in reference to me at any point in my life. It was not being used by the speaker in this manner but only to bring out the absurdness.

Looking further, I found the Urban Dictionary definition which includes an additional word, Shooter . . .

Word Salad Shooter:
Person who speaks an incoherent series of words, sometimes just related enough to the topic at hand to keep his or her obsequious minions awed by his or her “brilliance.”

Used in a sentence:  Sarah Palin is the WORD SALAD SHOOTER of today.

Now, I actually own a Salad Shooter. It is a kitchen device into which you load your vegetables and then ‘shoot’ them in to a salad bowl. The time it takes to prepare the vegetables for the devise is longer than if you just cut them and put them right into the bowl. It was quite a ‘hot’ Christmas present many years ago and I can’t believe that I actually packed and moved with it. It has only been used 2 or 3 times at most.

As to the term word salad or word salad shooter, my thoughts went in much the same random way

Ah, the Italians. What is there to say? One has only to speak with the Italian accent and those around fall in love.

This is a simple salad with Romain lettuce croutons and Parmesan Cheese. The Star of the dish is the dressing which includes anchovies, egg, lemon, pepper and olive oil.

Though salads are a favorite and are often my cuisine of the day. I believe that I will attempt to be a bit more careful with my Word Salads in the future, after all I do not want to displace Sarah Palin as Word Salad Shooter of the day!
