Things my daughter didn’t tell me . . .

My daughter told me about Spanx. Spanx is an undergarment or ‘shapewear’ made out of spandex or spandex-lycra that helps hold things in place so that your body looks better in clothing.

I bought a couple of these pieces and have been wearing them. They are, on the most part comfortable and I feel as if my clothes look better with a few less ‘bumps’.

A couple of  things she may have omitted. Not sure if she neglected to share these pointers on purpose or if she wanted to see the outcome of my foray into this clothing option. We were going to be on vacation together so I made sure to pack the Spanx and some other new items.

All was going well until I mixed too many of the undergarments together. Hmmm, how to explain . . .  The Spanx are made out of spandex, a slippery, slick fabric. My underwear that I chose to wear that day was made out of another slippery fabric. Did I foresee any wardrobe malfunctions? Nope. My usual layering technique is to put the Spanx (the top slimming garment) inside my underwear as this helps to keep the top from ‘riding up’. Next up,  my pants and then a shirt or top. Cool. All ready to go out and run errands.

OOOPS, did I mention that the pants I chose to put on were not jeans but a legging type of number. A knit type number that stretched some and was smooth. Not a good combo let me say. The slippery fabric of the underwear over the slick fabric of the Spanx was not working as I anticipated. As we were walking around, I noticed my underwear shifting south. Along with the underwear, my pants were also trying to follow the underwear in a southern direction. Thank God my shirt was LONG. We stopped to look at a few things and I tried to find a rest room to adjust my wardrobe. No luck. I took a few steps away, ducked behind a display and did a quick adjustment confident that I now had things under control. (I’m sure the security camera caught everything, sigh)

My confidence was shortly lived however. We had more errands to run and the process of things heading south was repeated a few more times. My daughter turned to me at one point and said “What are you doing? Are you having some sort of problem?”

Not wanting to tell her what was going on, I answered “Nothing, everything is fine.”

Thank goodness we finished our errands and headed back to the condo. Whew! I immediately changed my clothes and no more southernly slippage occurred. I learned my lesson. One must choose carefully how much spandex, lycra or nylon one is going to layer. They can not touch each other, another fabric, such as cotton, must be between for success. Think ahead and consider the outcome. Walk around, test out some moves. More is not always better.

Good luck with your Spanx experiment.
