Oooooops

All of this transgender bathroom conversation has gotten to me. I may have been  a tad Politically Incorrect recently…

I was at the local public library when the need to use the facilities arose. While walking towards the Ladies Room, I noticed a gentleman turning to the right (the direction of the women’s bathroom) I softly shouted out “To the Left. It’s on your left.” without even thinking. He stopped, chuckled, looked up and turned to the left.

I headed to the right and then it hit me. OMG, did I just offend that person?

Clearly, he was a man. Okay? He was wearing, shorts, a t-shirt, tennis shoes a slightly balding head AND he had a mustache. There is no way that he could have been mistaken for a female.  In the parlance of the transgender community: “He was identifying as Male.”

I found myself thinking about the incident long after. Why? I’m not sure. What would I do if faced with the situation again? I can honestly say, I have no idea.

If, in the future, it is a single bathroom, I guess it wouldn’t matter to me. You’re in there alone with the door locked so who cares which sex uses the bathroom. Many of the bathrooms in public places have signs that are unisex now anyway. These are the solo room types though.

Those multi-stall ones, strictly gender specific and quite clear? If faced with the same situation again, I believe that I might respond the same way. These are not as private as the other types and I think for the sake of everyone’s sensitivities, maybe the ‘Family’ bathroom, if available might be a better choice. I may just start using that one myself.

Wow, when did things get so complicated?

What would you have done? It was an automatic reflex on my part.

Would love to hear your feedback.

  1. I went to a seafood restaurant where the bathrooms were labeled “Buoys” and “Gulls.” My date went into the Buoys because she thought Gulls was for Guys.

  2. Please do not give this another thought. Of course it was a knee-jerk response, but I believe anyone else would have reacted the same way. Are we all getting just too sensitive or what??? Let’s not overthink this.
