Best Present Ever

Tree and PresentsBest present ever . . .

At first I thought I was to write about my best Christmas present ever. After re-reading my ‘assignment’, I realized that it was Best Present Ever. What a relief!

My birthday falls in December. Throughout my life I’ve been given “Birthday/Christmas” gifts. Sometimes I would have to wait until Christmas for my birthday gift and others, I would get on my Birthday but not have anything for Christmas. Funny how that works.

Often (as finances dictated), the gifts would be practical, like underwear or sox. I learned early on in my family to not ask for anything  specific or special because the interpretation of one’s want could be misconstrued or just not understood.

I remember the year that one of my sisters asked for a Cello. She had been playing the cello for a few years and wanted one. That is what she asked for. Well, my Dad bought her a guitar since he couldn’t afford the cello. He thought it was a fantastic gift. It was a stringed instrument after all. Mind you a Cello is smaller than a bass and is played by sitting down and placing the instrument between your legs. Another thing is that you ‘bow’ or pluck a cello and it has 4 strings. A guitar, not so much. 6 strings and if you put that between your legs, people are going to wonder.

I played the violin and was afraid if I asked for one. What oh my, What might I get instead?

So, here is my thought regarding my assignment . . .

My first date with my future husband was on my birthday. He had polled all of his friends to see if he should ask me out since there was an age difference. Enough guys told him to go for it so Lucky me he asked me out.  It was a special and fun night. Two years later, he proposed on my birthday and gave me a beautiful engagement ring. For Christmas that year we chose the date to get married. February 6, 1977.

I would say that was my best Birthday/Christmas present EVER.

and now, a Haiku . . .

Marry me He said
One diamond Engagement Ring
YES was my answer
