Thoughtful Question

A question was recently asked regarding a moment that changed your life. It gave me pause.

I can give you a few . . .

1

I was at an event with my mother and made eye contact with a very handsome man across the room. I turned to my mother and said, “I’m going to marry that man.”

He came over and spoke with me and asked for my number; the rest is history. We married about 3 years later.

My husband was not well and had taken several tests. The doctor was instructed to call me with the results. My phone rang while I was driving to a meeting.

The doctor told me that he had lung cancer that was quite advanced and had metastasized throughout his abdomen and body.

I told him that my husband had already decided not to do any surgeries, and the doctor replied, “then he is going to die. I said yes, and it will be on HIS terms. At that moment, I became “Peace and Grace.”

When I arrived home from my meeting, I spoke to my almost 18-year-old daughter and my 20-year-old son and gave them the diagnosis. I told them from that moment on in our home that there would be Peace and Grace in the house.

If they could not come into the house that way, they would need to take a drive or something until they found their ‘Peace and Grace’ for their father.

The moments I have written were seminal moments for me. Earth-shattering and also eye-opening for the possibilities they offered.

The chance for me to become Peace and Grace and give him the space to be him in his final months and moments.

The everyday moments one first thinks of are; when a child is born and your instant love for that child, wedding day, etc. These were special for me, but these moments surpass them in many ways. Growth is possible even when there is darkness.
