I was reading about a college that is offering classes called “Adulting 101”<\/p>\n

Say What????<\/p>\n

These classes are to help college students\/millennials learn life skills and to assist them with transitioning out of college. Some of the topics that will be covered are:<\/p>\n

Basic or Bare Essentials of Cooking:<\/strong>
\n(one lesson is how to make a quesadilla with an iron!)
\nHow to boil water, how to cook an egg, grocery shopping and what to have on hand (pantry items and explaining what a \u2018a pantry\u2019 is)<\/p>\n

Basic Automotive care:<\/strong>
\nHow to open the hood of the car and check the fluids, oil, transmission, water
\nWhere to find the spare tire and how to change one
\nAuto insurance, yes it is important<\/p>\n

Finance:<\/strong>
\nHow to write a paper check and address an envelope
\nYou need to put money into your account before you use your ATM\/Debit card!
\nOnce you have that new job, direct deposit and how to set it up if available
\nManaging your bills and Budgeting
\nCredit, why it is important and how to apply for a credit card<\/p>\n

Finding friends in new places:<\/strong>
\nWow, going off to college didn\u2019t teach them how to make friends in new places? Interesting . . .
\nBeing social in the work place (What not to \u2018share\u2019)
\nNo, your boss is not your new BFF<\/p>\n

Job Search:<\/strong>
\nNow that you have that degree, it\u2019s time to find a job.
\nResume writing
\nHow to interview for a job (What to wear or not wear, don\u2019t answer your phone or even look at it, etc)<\/p>\n

I began to wonder, getting older is similar. The kids have moved on with their lives. Many of us find ourselves alone either through divorce or loss of a partner to death. Change in financial status. Is there a course of study for\u00a0 Senioring 2.0<\/strong><\/em>?<\/p>\n

Some sample courses:<\/p>\n

Cooking:<\/strong>
\nCooking for 1. Those old recipes just don\u2019t work the same
\nTry shopping at the dollar store
\nBuy a 1\/2 dozen eggs instead of the usual dozen.
\nFreeze slices of bread in ziplock bags. You know you aren\u2019t going to eat the whole loaf before it starts going bad<\/p>\n

Automotive care:<\/strong>
\nPut a reminder on your calendar or phone to check the oil or have it changed
\nKeys, Where did you put them?
\nTake the bus, Uber or Lyft<\/p>\n

Finance:<\/strong>
\nFixed incomes and how to survive
\nHow to make your dollar go further
\nDo you really need that many credit cards?<\/p>\n

Finding friends in new places:<\/strong>
\nChurch is a good place to start
\nActually venture out of your house and meet your neighbors
\nYou might be going to a few more funerals now so, at least you will have something in common
\nmeetup.com<\/p>\n

Volunteering:<\/strong>
\nIf you\u2019re not working anymore, find a place to volunteer
\nLibraries always need help
\nHospitals are grateful for volunteers<\/p>\n

Anyone have anymore ideas for my Senioring 2.0<\/strong><\/em> curriculum? I\u2019m sure we will have lots of interest in the course. Some may even forget and sign up twice!<\/p>\n
